Rams Stave Off Humiliation with Dramatic Fourth-Quarter Comeback Against Eagles

The Los Angeles Rams averted a potentially season-defining crisis Sunday, orchestrating a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 24-20. The victory not only saved the Rams from what could have been a humiliating start but also revived their Super Bowl hopes.

For much of the afternoon, the Rams appeared headed for a 1-3 record and a widening gap in the division standings. A loss would have placed them three games behind the undefeated 49ers and two games behind the 3-1 Seahawks. The upcoming schedule, which includes a home game against the Buffalo Bills, loomed large, threatening to push a team with championship aspirations into a deep hole before mid-October.

"Plenty of plays where we didn’t get the result we wanted," quarterback Matthew Stafford acknowledged after the game. "But we got the result we wanted at the end of the game."

The turning point came late in the fourth quarter. After the Rams' defense held the Eagles on fourth down at the Los Angeles 2-yard line, preserving a 20-10 deficit, the offense seized the opportunity. Running back Kyren Williams scored two crucial touchdowns in the final quarter, and defensive player Byron Young sealed the victory with two sacks on Philadelphia's last possession.

Head coach Sean McVay praised his team's resilience. "There were so many things that we can clean up, but for our group to come alive when they did and find a way to make the plays, and so many different guys, I’m really proud of them," McVay said. "I think a lot of teams would have folded in those situations. I think our defense kept giving us a reason to believe."

The victory came despite the absence of key defensive players Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald, who are expected to return. Their potential return to a team that is now 2-2, rather than 1-3, positions the Rams to pursue their season goals.

The Rams' comeback prevented another frustrating chapter against the Eagles, a team that has historically presented challenges. Philadelphia had become an opponent against whom the Rams often explained their shortcomings rather than showcasing improvements. However, the late-game heroics demonstrated the team's capacity to rally.

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford (9) in action against the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

While the comeback erases the immediate threat of a dire start, issues such as Stafford's two interceptions, penalties, and special teams miscues still require attention. The Rams now stand at 2-2, with ground to make up in the standings. However, the win against the Eagles provides a crucial building block.

Beating the Buffalo Bills next week could allow the Rams to build momentum and begin discussing consecutive victories, potentially revealing the strengths of the team forged through an uneven opening month. The opportunity to correct flaws before they become insurmountable is the immediate benefit of the hard-fought win in Philadelphia.
