Rams Sign Maximus Pulley from Eagles Practice Squad, Aiming to Bolster Special Teams
Coach Sean McVay explains the strategic acquisition of the defensive back following an injury to Ronnie Rivers.
The Los Angeles Rams have signed defensive back Maximus Pulley from the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad, a move that Rams head coach Sean McVay detailed on Thursday. The acquisition comes as the Rams prepare to face the Eagles in Week 4.
McVay stated that the decision to bring Pulley onto the active roster was primarily to address a need in special teams, particularly due to the injury of veteran running back Ronnie Rivers, a key contributor in that unit. Rivers is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks with an injury sustained recently.
"It was just a freak deal where he was jumping up, and I think he got it when he was just jumping up to loosen himself up. It’s a four- to six-week injury. I’m bummed out for Ronnie," McVay said. "We’re just a little bit lighter on the back end, so we figured, let’s bring him [Pulley] in."
The Rams coach also expressed a positive impression of Pulley's abilities after reviewing his college film. Pulley played at Wofford College last season, where he recorded five interceptions, one forced fumble, and 80 total tackles.
"We’ll welcome him with open arms and go from there," McVay added.
Pulley's role with the Rams may extend beyond special teams. Starting safety Kamren Kinchens did not participate in practice on Thursday due to a hamstring injury. As it stands, Pulley is listed as the third safety on the Rams' depth chart, behind Tanner Ingle and Jaylen McCollough.
Pulley previously made a notable impression during the preseason, with Pro Football Focus ranking him as the 12th-highest-graded safety after he logged 16 tackles and five stops.
