Rams Legend Whitworth Calls 49ers Loss a Wake-Up Call

Andrew Whitworth, a Super Bowl-winning former left tackle for the Los Angeles Rams, has described the team's 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne as a humbling experience and a necessary wake-up call for a roster with Super Bowl aspirations.

"The NFL has a way of humbling you very quickly," Whitworth told Front Office Sports. He emphasized that the team "can't just show up and people are going to bow down to you," warning that complacency could be detrimental.

The Rams' performance against the 49ers was marked by offensive struggles. The team generated minus-0.289 expected points added per play, with their passing game contributing minus-0.454 EPA per attempt. They converted only two of nine third downs, committed two turnovers, and scored on just three of their red-zone trips.

San Francisco outgained Los Angeles with 379 total yards, converting seven of twelve third downs and preventing any sacks. The offensive struggles extended to key players, with quarterback Matthew Stafford throwing for 155 yards and an interception, and newly acquired defensive player Myles Garrett finishing the game without a single tackle, sack, or quarterback hit.

Despite the decisive loss, Whitworth urged Rams fans to "R-E-L-A-X!", referencing past seasons where teams started slowly but recovered. He noted the 2025 New England Patriots' opening loss to a Raiders team that ultimately reached the Super Bowl, and highlighted the Rams' own history of overcoming early-season deficits, including a stretch from 3-2 to 12-5 last season.

The Rams' next opportunity to demonstrate a response comes Monday night against the New York Giants, who opened their season with a 28-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants arrive at SoFi Stadium with an opportunity to deepen Los Angeles' early deficit in the standings.

While past comebacks offer perspective, Whitworth cautioned that the Rams' offseason additions and preseason expectations guarantee nothing. Monday night's game will serve as the first measure of the team's ability to rebound from their significant Week 1 defeat.
