Rams Coach Sean McVay Explains Kicker Harrison Mevis' Release After Costly Misses
McVay stated that while Mevis' performance was a factor, the team's overall struggles led to the decision.
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay addressed the team's decision to release kicker Harrison Mevis less than 24 hours after their overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills. Mevis missed two crucial field goals in the 37-34 defeat, including a blocked 48-yard attempt in overtime that preceded the Bills' game-winning score.
McVay clarified that Mevis was not the sole reason for the Rams' collapse. "Ultimately, we need better production and that’s what we’re hoping to get out of Blake," McVay said, referring to new kicker Blake Grupe, who was signed off the New York Jets practice squad. "He wasn’t exclusively the reason. This is the greatest team sport."
McVay acknowledged Mevis' previous contributions, stating he "was a rock for us last year when we obviously struggled in that area." However, with the Rams aiming for Super Bowl contention, consistent performance is paramount. Mevis, who had a strong finish to the 2025 season and playoffs, struggled this season, making only five of nine field goal attempts for a 55.6 percent success rate, the lowest in the NFL.
Grupe brings experience from stints with the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts. While he had a perfect 11-for-11 record with Indianapolis last season, he previously faced consistency issues in New Orleans. The Rams are looking for immediate improvement from the special teams unit, which has been a recurring concern for McVay's team.
