Rams Brace for Ex-Coordinator LaFleur's Return with Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals, facing a significant uphill battle against the Los Angeles Rams, will rely on a unique advantage: the inside knowledge held by their coach, Mike LaFleur. Having spent three seasons as the Rams' offensive coordinator, LaFleur possesses a deep understanding of Sean McVay's offensive schemes, quarterback Matthew Stafford's tendencies, and the team's communication at the line of scrimmage.

Despite this familiarity, the Cardinals enter the matchup as significant underdogs. They currently stand at 1-4, having conceded 142 points in their last four games, and are projected to be 12.5-point underdogs. The challenge for Arizona is not just knowing the Rams' playbook, but having the personnel to execute against it.

For McVay, facing former assistants has become a recurring theme. His coaching tree has produced numerous successful coaches, but his record against them is 5-8. Notable examples include losses to his brother, Matt LaFleur, and Raheem Morris. Mike LaFleur represents the latest in a line of "graduates" returning to challenge their former mentor.

LaFleur's tenure with the Rams from 2023 to 2025 allowed him to study Stafford and McVay's methods closely. However, McVay acknowledges the inherent challenge but remains focused on the game itself, stating, "You want to be careful to chase a ghost because it still is a player’s game." Stafford echoes this sentiment, believing that while LaFleur may know his preferences, executing against them is a different matter. "With only one year removed, there are things you sit there and you could stay up all night and go, ‘Oh, does he think this or think that?’ You just go play the game," Stafford said.

The Rams also have their own intelligence on LaFleur. Safety Kam Curl noted that the Rams regularly alter their defensive terminology, mitigating any advantage LaFleur might have gained from his time with the team. "He knows us, but we know him, too," Curl stated.

The Cardinals, who have already secured a victory at SoFi Stadium this season by defeating the Chargers, face a Rams team coming off a tough overtime loss to Buffalo. The Rams will also be without suspended left tackle Alaric Jackson, with veteran David Quessenberry stepping in. While LaFleur's knowledge could exploit potential weaknesses, the Cardinals' greatest asset might be the pressure on the Rams to secure a win, combined with their own demonstrated ability to perform at SoFi.

Despite the personal connections and shared history, the focus for both teams remains on the competitive outcome of Sunday's game.
