Ramaswamy Rally Disrupted by Neighbors Protesting Attack Ad

Vivek Ramaswamy's Republican campaign rally in Circleville, Ohio, faced an unusual disruption Friday evening when neighbors from an adjacent property displayed signs criticizing his campaign's attack ad. The intimate outdoor gathering on the deck of a private home was met with a protest from across the fence, where supporters of Democratic rival Dr. Amy Acton held placards.

One handwritten sign directly visible from the rally declared, "Dear Vivek, So we are clear, CHILD ABUSE IS NOT OK!" The message was a clear reference to the controversy surrounding a recent attack advertisement Ramaswamy's campaign released, which features Donna Arthur, the estranged mother of Amy Acton.

Arthur, who has not seen her daughter in nearly half a century, appears in the 60-second commercial accusing Acton of dishonesty and claiming she "needs help." The advertisement has drawn significant criticism due to the traumatic circumstances of Acton's childhood, including past allegations of abuse. Acton has spoken publicly about experiencing homelessness and abuse during her youth.

The controversy has created divisions within Ohio's Republican party. Several prominent Republicans, including Gov. Mike DeWine, have urged Ramaswamy to withdraw the commercial, with DeWine describing it as "deeply, deeply troubling."

Despite the criticism from within his own party and from Democrats, Ramaswamy has refused to halt the ad campaign. Speaking at an earlier stop, he accused Democrats and the media of misrepresenting the advertisement, stating, "The irony is they're lying about an ad that is about lying."

Former President Donald Trump has also offered his support for Ramaswamy's continued use of the advertisement. Trump told Ramaswamy, "You've got to ride with it," according to a report from a rally in Iowa.

Acton, meanwhile, has accused Ramaswamy of exploiting her childhood trauma. "I won't normalize somebody who has said that my childhood is just something I'm complaining about," she stated in an interview.

The incident in Circleville occurred as Ramaswamy participated in a statewide GOP bus tour. The rally itself was held on a small residential deck decorated with American flags and bunting, with supporters gathered closely around the speaker. Journalist Brennan Leach highlighted the protest on X, sharing photographs of the scene and noting that the neighbors were Acton supporters. The protest underscored the contentious nature of the race for Ohio governor, with Republican and Democratic messages on display just feet apart.
