Ram 3500 Tops List of Vehicles Most Dangerous to Other Drivers
A new report identifies the top 10 vehicles that pose the greatest risk to motorists and pedestrians outside the vehicle, while offering significant protection to their own occupants.
The Ram 3500 pickup truck has been identified as the vehicle most dangerous to other drivers on the road, according to a September 2026 report from Hines Law. The study analyzed driver fatality rates to compare the number of deaths among occupants of a given vehicle versus the number of deaths among drivers of other vehicles involved in crashes with it.
The research examined nearly 200 vehicle models, measuring fatality rates per million vehicle-years to ensure a fair comparison between common and rare models. The analysis combined the rates of deaths for drivers of a specific vehicle with the rates of deaths for drivers of other vehicles when involved in a collision with that model.
This methodology revealed that the Ram 3500 Crew Cab Long Bed 4WD poses a significant risk, with outside drivers being over five times more likely to die in a crash compared to the occupants of the Ram. The report noted the Ram 3500's weight, nearly 6,900 pounds, and indicated it generates approximately 90% more third-party property damage insurance claims than average vehicles.
Following the Ram 3500, the Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Crew Cab 4WD ranked second. While its own driver fatality rate is among the lowest studied, drivers of other vehicles face a fatality rate nearly 13 times higher. This heavy truck, exceeding 7,000 pounds, also results in about 60% more liability claims than other cars.
The Ram 2500 Crew Cab Short Bed 4WD secured the third position, with outside drivers facing a fatality risk more than five times greater than Ram 2500 occupants. Weighing over 6,700 pounds, this model also sees liability claims 63% higher than average.
The Ford F-150 SuperCrew 2WD, despite being lighter at approximately 4,500 pounds, ranked fourth. In crashes involving this model, other drivers are reportedly more than 14 times more likely to die than the F-150's driver.
Rounding out the top five is the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Crew Cab 4WD, weighing 6,600 pounds. In this case, other drivers die at a rate more than five times higher than the occupants of the Silverado.
The study also highlighted a general trend regarding larger vehicles. An adult pedestrian struck by an SUV is 44% more likely to die than one hit by a smaller car, with the risk increasing to 82% for children. While some experts in the UK have called for restrictions on SUV sizes, a Hines Law expert suggested such measures are unlikely in the U.S. due to the cultural significance of large trucks. The report listed the top 10 vehicles posing the greatest danger to other road users as:
