Raiders' Running Game Prospects Diminish as Key Player Questionable for Rams Clash

The Las Vegas Raiders' already struggling running game faces another significant challenge as rookie running back Mike Washington Jr. is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams. Washington is dealing with foot and back injuries, potentially limiting the team's options as they attempt to end a three-game losing streak.

The Raiders' offense has relied heavily on quarterback Kirk Cousins this season, but the unit as a whole has been unbalanced, particularly in establishing a dependable rushing attack. Washington's potential absence exacerbates this issue, as the team seeks to avoid further derailing their season.

Ashton Jeanty remains the primary focus in the backfield, but the Raiders have found it difficult to consistently create running lanes. Washington's availability provided a much-needed option to spell Jeanty and share the physical workload. His absence would further complicate efforts to find offensive consistency.

Both the Raiders, at 3-3, and the 2-4 Rams are looking to rebound from disappointing starts. For the Raiders, a more effective ground game is seen as crucial to addressing offensive shortcomings that have contributed to their recent losses.

Inconsistent gains and negative plays on the ground have often put Cousins in difficult passing situations. This has been particularly evident near the goal line, where the Raiders have struggled to convert red-zone opportunities into touchdowns. Last Sunday's 33-30 loss to the Buffalo Bills highlighted these issues, with the Raiders scoring touchdowns on only two of their five red-zone drives, including a possession that stalled at the Bills' 2-yard line.

These missed scoring opportunities proved costly in a game decided by three points. While Washington's potential absence does not alter the underlying need to improve blocking and execution, it reduces the available personnel for coach Klint Kubiak as he searches for solutions.

Kubiak has already made changes to the offensive line, inserting Caleb Rogers at right guard in place of Jackson Powers-Johnson, signaling the urgency to find a more effective front. This urgency persists heading into the Rams game.

Despite the challenges, the Raiders have shown they can compete with strong opponents, as evidenced by their close contests against the Chiefs and Bills. Sunday's game presents another opportunity to convert that competitiveness into a victory, though the team's ability to run the ball effectively remains a key question.
