Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty has declared himself healthy and "super excited" to play in the team's Week 1 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, signaling a significant recovery from an ankle injury sustained in late August. Jeanty was a full participant in practices on Wednesday and Thursday, bolstering expectations for his availability.
The injury, which occurred on August 23 during a practice session where Jeanty landed awkwardly after catching a pass from quarterback Kirk Cousins, initially raised concerns about his Week 1 status. He required assistance from trainers and could not initially put weight on his foot. However, Jeanty stated that the injury appeared more alarming than it felt and he anticipated it would not be a long-term issue.
Jeanty's return is crucial for the Raiders' offense. Last season, he recorded 975 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 266 carries, averaging 3.67 yards per attempt. He also contributed 55 receptions for 346 yards. Analysis of his performance revealed that a significant portion of his yardage came after contact, with only 126 rushing yards gained before initial contact. This suggests his ability to create yardage despite blocking challenges.
With new coach Klint Kubiak implementing changes, improved blocking could amplify Jeanty's post-contact production. However, the absence of more than two weeks of practice due to the injury may open opportunities for rookie running back Mike Washington Jr. Washington impressed during the preseason, accumulating 168 yards on 23 carries, and was a priority selection for Kubiak, who pushed the Raiders to trade up for him at the 122nd pick. Washington's size, speed, and direct running style are seen as a complementary fit to Jeanty's running abilities.
Despite the potential for Washington to see increased snaps, Jeanty's recovery has addressed the Raiders' primary backfield concern heading into their season opener against the Dolphins.
