Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza is quickly becoming known for more than just his on-field performance. During a sideline interview with ESPN reporter Laura Rutledge on Thursday night, Mendoza delivered a memorable and lighthearted message to broadcaster Joe Buck.
"Please tell Mr. Buck I said hello," Mendoza told Rutledge as the interview concluded. When asked about Troy Aikman, Mendoza acknowledged the "legend" but added, "I think Mr. Buck needs more love."
The exchange was met with laughter from Buck and Aikman in the broadcast booth. "See, there it is, back to Mr. Buck — that's the stuff," Buck remarked during the game broadcast, with Aikman calling Mendoza a "refreshing personality."
Mendoza, the No. 1 overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner, led Indiana to a national championship before joining the Raiders. He had a solid debut the previous week, completing 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown. In Thursday's preseason game against the Houston Texans, Mendoza experienced a "welcome-to-the-NFL moment" when his pass was intercepted for an 80-yard touchdown. He finished the game completing 8 of 15 passes for 86 yards, as the Raiders went on to win 22-20 after he left the game.
Mendoza has also made headlines for his approach to life off the field, previously stating that the Las Vegas Strip, known for its nightlife, is like a "boogeyman" to him. This focus on personal conduct is likely what the Raiders' front office hopes to hear from their franchise quarterback.
