Raiders Rookie QB Fernando Mendoza Wears Helmet on Sideline for Season Opener

Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza adopted an unusual approach during the team's season-opening victory against the Miami Dolphins, remaining on the sidelines with his helmet on for the entire game. Mendoza, the Raiders' first-overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, explained that he wore the helmet to better simulate the experience of being on the field and to clearly hear play calls.

"Wearing the helmet is pretty crucial because that’s where the play calls come in through, and that’s the microphone you hear from the speaker," Mendoza told The Athletic. "When I wear the helmet, I can [experience] what I would actually see on the field."

Mendoza, a product of Indiana, has been kept on the sidelines as the team prioritizes the development of starting quarterback Kirk Cousins. The Raiders are reportedly committed to a slow-play approach for their highly touted rookie.

Despite a sufficient performance from Cousins in Week 1, the limitations of the veteran quarterback were evident, particularly in his downfield passing game. Cousins completed only one pass of 10 or more yards against the Dolphins. If the Raiders' offense becomes predictable due to struggles in long-yardage passing, the team might consider turning to Mendoza sooner.

For now, Mendoza continues his development as a backup, learning by observation rather than immediate game action, a strategy the team believes will benefit him in the long run.
