The Las Vegas Raiders have not officially named a starting quarterback for the upcoming season, a decision that could accelerate the timeline for rookie first-overall pick Fernando Mendoza. While veteran Kirk Cousins has taken the majority of first-team repetitions throughout training camp and is considered the likely Week 1 starter, coach Klint Kubiak declined to make an official announcement following the team's preseason win over the Texans.
"We got another week. I don’t want anyone to be comfortable in their job," Kubiak stated Thursday night. "It should always be that way for all positions. So, let’s keep going."
This stance leaves the door open for Mendoza, the future of the franchise according to team leadership, including minority owner Tom Brady and general manager John Spytek. The organization has consistently expressed a preference to allow Mendoza time to learn the NFL offense and adjust to the speed of professional defenses without immediate pressure to perform in critical regular-season games. This philosophy was a primary driver behind the signing of Cousins, a four-time Pro Bowler.
Mendoza's performance in his first NFL start against the Texans included an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown, a mistake that highlighted the very reasons the Raiders have preached patience with the young quarterback. However, one misstep is not expected to alter the team's overall assessment of his potential.
The question for the Raiders is not whether Mendoza will eventually lead the team, but when. Given that he was drafted first overall, it is anticipated that Mendoza will see meaningful playing time during his rookie season, barring an unexpectedly successful and sustained playoff run by the team. Waiting too long to give a highly drafted quarterback opportunities, especially if the season loses meaning, could be viewed as a missed chance for development.
Historically, sitting rookie quarterbacks behind established veterans, such as Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City and Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, was a common practice. However, the modern NFL trend leans towards getting highly drafted quarterbacks onto the field sooner. This shift is influenced by organizational impatience, the financial advantages of having a quarterback on a rookie contract, and the fundamental understanding that development requires game experience.
While Cousins remains the favorite to start the season, Kubiak's decision to not officially name him starter leaves room for interpretation. It could be a standard coaching tactic to maintain competition across all positions, or it could signal a willingness to consider Mendoza sooner if circumstances dictate. Until Kubiak formally closes the competition, Mendoza retains a potential pathway to an earlier-than-expected starting role.
