The Las Vegas Raiders implemented a strategy during training camp and the preseason that extended beyond simply determining a starting offensive line. By alternating snaps between Jackson Powers-Johnson and Caleb Rogers at right guard, the team was preparing for a scenario that has now materialized with Powers-Johnson's recent groin injury.

Coach Klint Kubiak had indicated this approach in August, stating, “Both of those guys are going to play this year.” This was not solely an assessment of a competitive position battle, but rather a deliberate plan to ensure readiness for the regular season, acknowledging Powers-Johnson's injury history and the need for a dependable backup.

Powers-Johnson sustained a groin injury during the Raiders' game against the Saints on Sunday. "We just keep getting him healthy and hope to get him to some practice reps this week so he can play," Kubiak said regarding Powers-Johnson's status. With Powers-Johnson unable to practice on Wednesday and Thursday, the Raiders are increasingly likely to rely on Rogers.

The summer rotation has positioned Rogers to potentially make the transition seamless. Kubiak's decision to involve Rogers with the starters during the offseason was a calculated move to develop the young player in a high-pressure environment. This approach provided Rogers with valuable experience in executing assignments alongside the starters he would eventually depend on.

Rogers acknowledged the importance of consistency, stating, “When it comes to treating every single day the same, treating every single game every single week as our Super Bowl, it’s the most important day we have because it’s the only day we have.” This mindset is crucial for offensive line play, where communication, blocking schemes, and timing are paramount.

The Raiders' strategy balanced immediate personnel needs with a long-term developmental opportunity. While Powers-Johnson prepared for his role, Rogers gained experience that could strengthen the overall offensive line unit. This proactive approach ensured that the team was better prepared for eventualities like Powers-Johnson's injury, rather than being caught off guard.

Kubiak's summer plan ensured that even if the starting right guard was uncertain, the team would have a ready backup. This foresight highlights the Raiders' commitment to building depth and resilience across their offensive line.
