Raiders Prepared for Bills' Antics, Coach Kubiak Had Players Warned

Las Vegas Raiders coach Klint Kubiak had his team prepared for the possibility of Buffalo Bills players attempting to test their composure during their recent matchup. Kubiak's pregame message was clear: any player who retaliated against provocation would be benched.

"We knew going in there were certain guys that were going to try to do that to us, and the players knew before the game that if they got into it, they’d be standing by me on the sideline," Kubiak stated. This warning proved prescient when Bills defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected after spitting at Raiders tight end Brock Bowers during Buffalo's 33-30 victory.

Although Kubiak did not name specific players who might engage in such behavior, the incident with Gardner-Johnson aligned with the type of situation he had cautioned his team against. Bowers, the target of the spitting incident, maintained his composure and the Raiders continued play without further escalation from their side.

Bowers downplayed the confrontation, stating, “I don’t even know. Just talking a little bit, and then I really don’t know.” However, he emphasized the team's ability to remain calm, adding, “Yeah, I feel like we’re a calm, collected group. So I think going out there, we knew what to expect, and we just keep our calm and keep our composure.”

Kubiak, who had not seen the spitting incident, declined to comment directly on it but reiterated the team's preparedness. Quarterback Kirk Cousins, from his perspective on the field, noted the officials' actions and the resulting field position advantage without fully knowing the details of the incident. “Okay, I know it’s going to be first and 10, much closer than I thought it was going to be,” Cousins recalled. “So, I don’t know what happened. I just know we got much better field position, and that was really all I had time to think about.”

Gardner-Johnson later issued an apology on social media, taking full responsibility for his actions and acknowledging that spitting on an opponent was inappropriate and unnecessary. He stated that he would hold himself to a higher standard moving forward.

Despite the team's composure, the Raiders ultimately lost the game. However, the incident highlighted the Raiders' adherence to Kubiak's directives on maintaining discipline in the face of opponent misconduct. Building a dependable team, Kubiak suggested, involves establishing how players respond when provoked.
