Raiders Owner Mark Davis Addresses Fernando Mendoza's Starting Quarterback Status

Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis acknowledged the significant anticipation surrounding rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the team's top draft pick, but stressed that football operations will dictate when he is ready to take over as the starter. Davis expressed his admiration for Mendoza's work ethic, competitive drive, and eagerness to learn, likening him to a sponge absorbing information.

"I love his work ethic,” Davis told The Post during an interview at the NFL owners meetings. “I love that he’s like a sponge in terms of learning." He added, "He wants to be the greatest. He enjoys the game, he’s competitive. Everything you think of, he’s got."

Mendoza, who has already made his NFL debut against the New England Patriots, is viewed as the future face of the franchise. However, Davis maintains a hands-off approach to day-to-day football decisions, including the quarterback depth chart.

The Raiders are currently navigating a balance between competing in the present and developing for the future, with the team holding a 3-3 record. Veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins is leading the offense, providing an experienced presence for Mendoza to learn from.

Davis offered high praise for Cousins, describing his performance and approach as "fantastic."

"Just watching him play, he sees the field really well,” Davis said of Cousins. “He goes to his first, second and third reads very consistently, very fast. And he’s a tough SOB. He wants to win.”

The presence of a seasoned quarterback like Cousins is seen as crucial for Mendoza's development. Davis emphasized that the ultimate decision on when Mendoza is ready to start full-time will rest with the team's football decision-makers.

Adding a unique element to the Raiders' ownership is seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, who is a minority owner of the franchise. Davis hinted at Brady's involvement by stating, "Luckily for him, the GOAT is in the building."

While the excitement for Mendoza is palpable among fans and within the league, Davis underscored that the most critical evaluation will occur on the field. "If he can play football, he’s going to be great,” Davis concluded.

The team's strategy appears to be carefully managing Mendoza's progression, akin to anticipating opening a significant gift, ensuring that when the time comes, the potential is fully realized.
