Raiders' Dont'e Thornton Faces Roster Deadline Amid Health and Performance Concerns
With his practice window closing, wide receiver Dont'e Thornton remains sidelined despite being medically cleared, raising questions about his future with the team.
The Las Vegas Raiders are approaching a critical deadline for wide receiver Dont’e Thornton, whose season is in jeopardy as he has yet to be activated from injured reserve. Despite being cleared to practice, Thornton is not expected to play in the upcoming game against the Rams, with the 21-day practice window set to close on October 28.
Raiders coach Klint Kubiak confirmed Thornton's health, stating, “Yeah, he’s healthy.” Kubiak also noted Thornton’s progress in practice, adding, “He’s making big progress. He’s done a lot of good things in practice. Still working back into getting his football legs back after missing a lot of time. But I’ve been really pleased with his effort, with his detail. He’s close.” However, “close” has not been close enough for activation, leaving the team with limited bodies at the wide receiver position and a need for a dependable contributor beyond Tre Tucker.
Thornton, a fourth-round pick in the 2025 draft, possesses a rare combination of size and speed, standing 6-foot-5 with a 4.30-second 40-yard dash time. His raw potential was the attraction for the Raiders, but he arrived as a prospect needing development rather than a finished product. In his rookie season, Thornton recorded 10 catches for 135 yards and no touchdowns in 15 games, indicating the work still needed to translate his physical gifts into consistent NFL production.
The Raiders opened Thornton’s practice window on October 7. If he is not activated before the window closes on October 28, he will remain on injured reserve for the remainder of the season, potentially costing him an entire year of development. This situation is particularly concerning for a player drafted on potential.
The looming decision on Thornton comes as another receiver, Jack Bech, is eligible to return from injured reserve next week after recovering from a broken forearm. Bech’s versatility in the pass game, blocking, and special teams could make him a priority for the 53-man roster, further complicating Thornton's outlook.
While the door remains open for Thornton to prove he can contribute, the Raiders are seeking tangible production. With his health no longer the stated impediment, the focus shifts to whether he can demonstrate the capabilities the coaching staff requires, especially as a critical deadline approaches.
