Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak's recent comments about tight end Brock Bowers' knee surgery have created confusion regarding the injury's timeline and the player's availability. Kubiak officially ruled Bowers out of the team's season opener against the Dolphins but struggled to provide a clear explanation for when the injury occurred and when the team became aware of the need for surgery.
"It all happened pretty quick," Kubiak told reporters Friday. "I don’t remember exactly what day, but yeah, we got it cleaned up." When pressed about a reported one-to-two-game absence, Kubiak declined to discuss timelines further.
This evasiveness contrasts with Kubiak's statement on Wednesday, when he indicated that both Bowers and defensive end Maxx Crosby were expected to be ready for the season opener. Bowers underwent a meniscus trim on Tuesday in Dallas. Reports suggest the injury occurred during training camp but was not diagnosed until the previous week, meaning the procedure had already taken place by the time Kubiak expressed confidence in their availability.
The discrepancy has led to questions about the clarity of the team's communication. While there is no definitive proof of deception, Kubiak's assurance that Bowers might play even after surgery, coupled with his hazy recollection on Friday, has left an impression of mixed messaging.
Bowers is considered a central figure in Kubiak's offensive scheme. He recorded an NFL rookie-record 112 catches in 2024 and followed up with 64 receptions for 680 yards and seven touchdowns in an injury-shortened 2025 season. His efficiency is notable; on plays where Bowers was directly involved, the Raiders generated approximately 0.57 EPA per play with a 56.3% success rate. This significantly outperforms the metrics of other key offensive players.
While Michael Mayer is expected to take on a more substantial role, replacing Bowers' versatility and impact will necessitate a collective adjustment by the team. Kubiak did confirm that Bowers will not play in Sunday's opener, but the path to that decision remains unclear.
