Raiders' Brock Bowers Remains Sidelined with Knee Injury
The tight end's status for Sunday's game against the Chargers is uncertain as he continues to recover from a meniscus trim.
Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers was not present at practice Wednesday as the team began preparations for their Week 2 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. Bowers' continued absence keeps his availability for Sunday's game in doubt.
Bowers underwent a meniscus trim procedure last week, and coach Klint Kubiak described his status as "day-to-day." Kubiak expressed optimism that Bowers might practice later in the week.
According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, the injury is "not overly serious," and Bowers could have played in Week 1 if necessary. The Raiders, however, are prioritizing his full recovery and will not rush his return until they are confident his knee is no longer a limiting factor.
Graziano reported that Bowers could potentially return by Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs, but it might happen sooner. The Raiders' offensive strategy in Week 1 demonstrated their ability to function without Bowers, securing a 27-13 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
During the game, tight end Michael Mayer played a significant role, participating in 55 of 68 offensive snaps. Mayer, who recently signed a three-year, $45 million extension, caught seven targets for 32 yards. While Mayer provided a reliable short-yardage option, he could not fully replicate Bowers' capacity to stretch the field, create yards after the catch, or threaten defenses from multiple alignments.
Running back Ashton Jeanty led the team with 45 receiving yards and matched Mayer's six receptions, indicating a reliance on underneath passes. The Raiders' Week 1 performance suggests they can manage without Bowers, but his return is expected to significantly enhance the offense's potential and present a more complex challenge for opponents like the Chargers.
The timeline for Bowers' return will likely depend on his progress in practice on Thursday and Friday.
