Rahm Emanuel Calls Democratic Socialists a Separate Party, Backs Michigan Senate Candidate

Former U.S. Ambassador Rahm Emanuel has reiterated his view that democratic socialists constitute a separate political party, while simultaneously expressing support for Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee in Michigan's closely contested Senate race.

Emanuel, a prominent Democrat who has been critical of the progressive wing of his party, stated at the Texas Tribune Festival that "Democratic Socialists are a separate party. I'll see you in November." He made these remarks in an interview with Fox News Digital.

Despite his distinctions, Emanuel affirmed his support for El-Sayed's candidacy. When pressed if he hoped El-Sayed would win the race for Democrats, Emanuel responded, "Yeah."

Emanuel's comments come amid a period of increased visibility for Democratic Socialist candidates. Several such candidates have won Democratic primaries across the country in recent elections, with some endorsements from prominent figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and support rallies from figures such as Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

El-Sayed himself has distanced himself from the socialist label, despite backing from prominent democratic socialists. Emanuel, who is reportedly considering a presidential bid in 2028, has been vocal about his belief that certain progressive policies, such as defunding the police or open borders, are not aligned with the broader Democratic Party's platform or the views of swing voters.

"Swing voters in swing states swing presidential elections. That is it. It's not more complicated. And you better be focused on winning," Emanuel stated. He emphasized that while the party may have healthy debates between its progressive and pragmatic wings, this is characteristic of a coalition party, not a fundamental shift in its core identity.

During the festival, Emanuel also praised Democratic Texas Senate nominee James Talarico, highlighting Talarico's comfort in discussing his faith. Emanuel's remarks underscore the ongoing internal discussions within the Democratic Party regarding its ideological direction and electoral strategy.
