RAF Coningsby, a critical quick reaction alert station in Lincolnshire, has increased its force protection training for all personnel, incorporating enhanced combat first aid, additional firearms drills, and awareness of chemical, biological, and radiological hazards. The initiative reflects a strategic recognition of evolving threats, both domestically and internationally.

Wing Commander Ian Hart, commanding officer of 29 Squadron at RAF Coningsby, stated that the heightened security posture is a response to the understanding that "the threat can come to us very, very easily in today's world." He emphasized the need for personnel to be constantly prepared and to refresh their skills to act effectively should threats materialize.

The base is now the first in the UK to implement Module 2 Individual Readiness Training as its minimum standard for all staff. Warrant Officer Lee Hargreaves, who commands the specialized Force Protection Training Flight staffed by members of the RAF Regiment, highlighted that this mandatory training extends to every role within the Air Force, from pilots to chefs, HR specialists, and musicians. He noted that while specific trades are essential, the 96% of personnel not in flying roles are crucial to supporting the 4% who are pilots.

The enhanced combat first-aid component of the training is particularly relevant in light of modern warfare tactics, such as drone strikes. Warrant Officer Hargreaves pointed to the conflict in Ukraine as an example where personnel may find themselves as the first responders in various situations, whether at their home base or overseas.

The Force Protection Training Flight, described as the "unsung guardians" of the RAF, delivers this comprehensive training. The broadened scope aims to ensure that all service members possess the necessary skills to meet operational requirements in an unpredictable global security landscape. The training includes live-fire weapons practice and preparation for various hazardous environments.
