Racecourse Fined After Jockey Transported in Horsebox
Sedgefield Racecourse was fined £6,500 for failing to comply with safety regulations after a jockey was taken to the hospital in a horsebox.
Sedgefield Racecourse has been fined £6,500 by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) for multiple safety violations, including the improper transport of an injured jockey.
The incident occurred in March when a jockey sustained a left clavicle and shoulder injury following a fall. Although examined by a doctor at the course and cleared to race again, the jockey later reported persistent pain, prompting a doctor's recommendation for hospital assessment.
By the time the jockey needed transport, all ambulance crews had departed the venue. Instead of an ambulance, the jockey was transported in a horsebox, with medical staff following in a car. The BHA disciplinary panel noted that this practice failed to comply with general instructions requiring proper hospital transfer accompanied by qualified medical staff.
Additional failings identified at the racecourse included a non-functional telephone line and facilities described as "tired worn rooms not conveying a clean clinical area." The racecourse has since acknowledged the shortcomings, and an inspection in April indicated significant improvements.
