U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in American history, has been hospitalized for over three weeks, raising concerns about his health. McConnell, 84, was admitted for treatment on June 14, according to his staff, who have not disclosed the specific reason for his hospital stay or the nature of his treatment. His aides stated on July 2 that he was "receiving excellent care" and "continues to improve."

Speculation regarding McConnell's condition intensified after far-right influencer Laura Loomer claimed on X, formerly Twitter, that the Kentucky senator was in a "vegetative state" and alleged a "cover-up." Loomer also criticized McConnell's wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, for traveling to China during his hospitalization.

Several media outlets have reported that emergency calls made from McConnell's home seeking assistance for an "unconscious" person suffering from "cardiac arrest" were documented by 911 dispatchers. The call recordings also indicated that CPR was being administered to the patient, though McConnell was not explicitly named in the recordings.

In response to the claims, several Republican colleagues stated they had spoken by phone with McConnell. A spokesperson for Senate Leader John Thune reported that Thune and McConnell held "a lengthy and substantive conversation that covered a variety of topics including national security."

During Senator McConnell's hospital stay, his wife, Elaine Chao, met with Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng in Beijing on June 17, three days after McConnell was admitted. The Chinese government confirmed the meeting. A spokesperson for Chao stated that McConnell's health "did not warrant an immediate return" for Chao, who was on a long-planned trip to support her family's philanthropic endeavors. She has since returned to the U.S.
