Questions Arise Over Met's Handling of Letter in Thomas Markle Saga

The Metropolitan Police's decision not to act on a letter detailing allegations against Thomas Markle Sr. has become a central, perplexing question in the ongoing saga surrounding him, raising fears of a 'nothing-to-see-here' cover-up that could prove damaging to the Royal family.

In 2022, three years after the Met had shown her the letter, Meghan Markle referenced it in her and Prince Harry's Netflix documentary, stating she had always been "a Daddy's girl." The police disclosed the letter's contents to Meghan presumably because she had become a member of the Royal family by that time, having married Prince Harry in 2018.

Julian Hayes, a lawyer specializing in privacy and data protection, highlighted that if the police had possessed the letter, they would have been bound by the Data Protection Act to inform Mr. Markle of its existence and the allegations it contained, and to seek his permission before disclosing its contents to anyone else.

However, the Metropolitan Police appear to have done precisely the opposite. Instead of confronting Mr. Markle with the allegations, they showed the letter to his daughter, Meghan.

This raises further questions about why the police did not treat the allegations with more seriousness. It is unclear whether the Metropolitan Police received the letter before or after Meghan's marriage to Prince Harry. If they received it before, they were under no obligation to pass it to her. If they received it after, they should have informed Mr. Markle. The article suggests that the police may have acted on the assumption that, as a Royal, Meghan had a right to know.

Thomas Markle Sr. has been accused of child sex offenses, with a Philippine minister stating that "all signs point to a possible sex offender of the grossest kind." While the full details of these allegations remain under investigation, the handling of the letter by the Metropolitan Police has added another layer of controversy to the already complex situation involving Meghan's father.
