Queen Maxima of the Netherlands recently traded royal duties for a night of dancing at an event in Amsterdam. The 55-year-old monarch and her 21-year-old daughter, Princess Alexia, attended a performance by American house DJ Armand Van Helden on October 24.
The event was part of the annual Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), which ran from October 21 to 25. Both Maxima and Alexia are reportedly fans of the artist. Princess Alexia is said to have traveled from London, where she is studying Civil Engineering at UCL, specifically for the performance.
Footage from the event captured the mother-daughter pair dancing enthusiastically in the crowd and interacting with other fans. The venue, Hemkade48, shared on Instagram that they were proud to host the Queen and Princess, noting it was a first in their 32-year history for the Queen to be a fan of Armand Van Helden.
Queen Maxima wore a black top with lace detailing, accessorized with chunky gold earrings and a statement necklace. Princess Alexia chose a one-shoulder top. This outing marks a rare moment of casual public engagement for the Dutch royals.
This is not the first time the royal family has been seen at public concerts. Queen Maxima and King Willem-Alexander have previously attended shows by artists such as Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, and Beyoncé.
More recently, the royal couple made a private visit to Dutch Design Week, engaging with designers and their work. This occurred during a period of fewer public engagements, partly coinciding with the Netherlands' autumn school holidays.
In April, the Dutch royals visited the United States, meeting with then-President Donald Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump at the White House for dinner and an overnight stay. Their three-day working trip also included visits to Philadelphia and Miami.
During their US visit, Queen Maxima wore a long-sleeved orange dress, while Melania Trump wore a white gown with black floral detailing. The meeting included formal greetings and interactions between the leaders.
Previously, Queen Maxima addressed an incident where she appeared to make a face while standing next to Donald Trump during a photo opportunity. Social media users speculated she was mocking him. However, during the Dutch royals' annual summer photo session, Maxima clarified that she had been saying "thank you" to someone who had assisted her and described the meeting with the President as a "pleasant experience."
