Residents near the Taff's Well quarry in Pontypridd, Wales, have reported damage to their homes and expressed frustration over increased vibrations and dust resulting from quarrying operations. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is investigating an incident that occurred at the end of July, which residents described as a blast that caused damage to approximately 15 properties.
Claire Allen, a 40-year-old resident, stated that the vibrations and dust from the blasting have intensified in recent years. "We shouldn't have to be anxious waiting in our own homes just for someone to blast our mountain up," Allen said, describing how some residents have reported photo frames falling off walls. She also noted that children are frightened by the blasts and that the dust is significant enough to require frequent cleaning and can affect individuals with respiratory conditions such as COPD and asthma.
Residents' concerns have been amplified since the quarry, Craig yr Hesg, was granted permission to expand its operations and continue quarrying until 2047. Allen expressed fear following the recent blast, stating, "Only once it needs to happen and now it has happened and we don't need it to happen to another area." The quarrying company has been permitted to continue operations despite ongoing resident complaints about the impact of the blasting activities on their properties and well-being.
The incident at Taff's Well is being treated as an isolated event by the quarry operators. However, the ongoing nature of the quarrying and the perceived worsening of its effects have left the community feeling anxious about future operations and the long-term impact on their homes and health.
