Putin Mocked for Height Discrepancy in Photo with Mozambique President
Online users shared memes and commentary after Russian President Vladimir Putin, reportedly 5'7", met with Mozambique's 6'5" President Daniel Chapo.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has become the subject of online mockery following a photo opportunity with Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo, who is significantly taller. Putin, who is reportedly 5 feet 7 inches tall, met with Chapo, who stands at 6 feet 5 inches, at the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Moscow.
While the Kremlin initially did not release official images of the meeting, Chapo later shared photographs on social media that highlighted the height difference between the two leaders. In response, Putin's official photographers released an image that appeared to have been taken from a lower angle, making the Russian president seem taller.
The disparity in height has fueled online commentary and memes, with users poking fun at Putin's perceived efforts to conceal his stature. One edited image depicted Chapo as the wizard Gandalf from "The Lord of the Rings" and Putin as a barefoot hobbit. Another meme showed a smaller version of Putin with the caption, "Why did you enlarge Putin on your photo? Here's the original." Some users commented on Putin's apparent insecurity about his height.
Putin is reportedly sensitive about his height and has been documented to take measures to appear taller. In 2023, he was photographed wearing high-heeled shoes during an appearance with students in Moscow. A 2015 report in The Express cited a Kremlin insider who claimed that bodyguards were instructed to be shorter than the president to create an impression of greater height.
The issue of height in politics has been discussed in broader contexts. In 2020, The Economist noted that height can matter in politics, citing research suggesting taller politicians tend to perform better in polls. This phenomenon has been attributed to perceptions of taller individuals possessing higher self-esteem and being seen as more intelligent and authoritative.
