Putin Ignores Trump's 'Energy Ceasefire' With Fresh Attacks on Ukraine

Heavy overnight Russian strikes killed at least six people across Ukraine and cut power to large parts of the capital, Kyiv, on October 14, 2026, as Vladimir Putin continued attacks despite a call for an "energy ceasefire" from former U.S. President Donald Trump.

President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine received no advance warning from Western allies before a Russian strike hit a Kyiv power plant. Ukraine relies on Western intelligence to detect incoming Russian attacks and identify targets, but recent developments involving Trump have raised questions about the reliability of these arrangements.

In Kyiv, a Russian strike on a multi-storey building in the Desnianskyi district killed two people, while another attack in Golosiivsky killed one, according to Ukraine's state emergency service. The Dnipropetrovsk region reported two deaths and six wounded from Russian attacks, and one person was killed in the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region.

Explosions were heard overnight in Kyiv, and electricity and water supplies were cut off in eastern parts of the city. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that "energy facilities in Kyiv and the surrounding region have come under a massive ballistic missile strike" and warned of power disruptions. Ukraine's largest private energy provider, DTEK, reported emergency power cuts in several districts of the capital.

Russian ballistic missile attacks were also reported in the Kharkiv and Zhytomyr regions, with other strikes hitting Sumy and Chernigiv. Meanwhile, the governor of Russia's Saratov region reported that a Ukrainian drone strike killed one person in the city of Balakovo.

Russian authorities claimed that air defense forces downed nearly 500 drones flying toward the capital Moscow overnight, with around 160 more intercepted over the Rostov region.

Earlier, Zelensky expressed surprise that a Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv had occurred without prior warning from Western allies. "The main target was energy infrastructure, specifically the CHP-4. Unfortunately, it was hit," he said on Facebook. He added that Ukraine's systems detected the missiles only as they neared the city, calling the lack of early warning "absolutely unjust."

Kyiv, a city of approximately three million people, has increasingly been targeted by Russian drones and missiles, with energy infrastructure being a primary focus. In recent weeks, residents have heard explosions before air raid sirens, a shift attributed by Ukrainian officials to the use of hard-to-detect missiles or potential technical issues.

Trump had announced an "energy ceasefire" on his Truth Social network on October 12, 2026, stating that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt long-range strikes on power infrastructure. Zelensky had previously suggested that continued strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure were Putin's response to Trump's claim. Trump has been critical of Zelensky's strategy, suggesting it was "time for Ukraine to get a new president" and facing criticism for plans to purchase diesel from Russia despite wartime sanctions.
