Putin Celebrates 74th Birthday With Massive Missile Barrage on Kyiv

Russian President Vladimir Putin marked his 74th birthday on Wednesday by ordering a "massive strike" on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and other regions, killing at least two people and plunging the city into a state of fear. The coordinated attacks targeted military-industrial facilities, transport infrastructure, and energy sites as winter approaches.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that two individuals died in a fire in the Darnytskyi district following the attack. Emergency services rescued two others from the blaze. "The bodies of two people who had been killed were found," Klitschko stated.

President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned residents of potential "massive strikes" based on updated intelligence. "We grabbed our things and came here, we live right next door," said Iryna Rybalchenko, a bank employee who took shelter in a subway station. "The whole of Kyiv is in a state of fear. We were stuck at work today and everyone – our group chats, our bosses – were messaging us to be careful."

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its forces had used high-precision land-, sea-, and air-launched weapons, as well as drones, to strike military-industrial facilities in Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions. Specific targets included sites involved in the production and storage of Flamingo cruise missiles and drones in Kyiv, as well as areas in Chernihiv, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, and Kharkiv. Attacks also hit port and ship-repair infrastructure in the Odesa region.

Air raid sirens sounded frequently throughout the day, prompting residents to seek shelter in subway stations, often with sleeping mats and blankets. "The children were absolutely terrified. Whenever there's heavy shelling, we try to head underground," said Daria Medvedeva, 36.

The Ukrainian air force issued warnings about incoming ballistic missiles, including one heading for Kyiv. In the Sumy Oblast region, Russian drone attacks reportedly killed two men and injured scores of people, including three children, when an apartment building was hit.

Kyiv's mayor had previously warned that the capital was under significant threat, with strikes on bridges and energy infrastructure. This latest escalation follows Ukrainian President Zelensky's assertion last week that Putin had ordered his military leaders to "abandon the rules of war," coinciding with an increased assault on civilian infrastructure.
