Putin Bolsters Air Defenses Around Valdai Residence Amid Ukrainian Strikes

Russian President Vladimir Putin has substantially augmented the air defense capabilities surrounding his Valdai forest palace, with new reports indicating over 50 surface-to-air missile positions have been established. This build-up includes 15 new towers erected within a 31-mile radius of the complex in the Novgorod region, a move described as indicative of Putin's heightened security concerns.

The total number of air defense positions around Valdai now exceeds 50, according to a Radio Svoboda investigation. This deployment is notable given the area's sparse population, which is less than 100,000, compared to the 20 million residents in the Moscow region, which is protected by a similar number of air defense sites.

The increased security measures come as Ukraine has intensified its attacks on Russian territory. While Kyiv has denied any intention to strike Putin's personal residence, the deployment of advanced air defense systems, including Pantsir, Tor, and S-400 missile systems, aims to counter potential aerial threats. One missile defense launcher has been positioned as close as 1,312 feet from the Valdai compound.

Local residents have observed the increased military activity, with one noting the constant construction and the sounds associated with the air defense systems. There are also reports of anti-drone nets being installed above nearby lorry parking areas, suggesting a fear of drone attacks launched from unconventional platforms, reminiscent of Ukraine's Operation Spiderweb.

In that operation last year, Ukraine reportedly concealed drones in trucks parked near military airfields. The drones were then launched from the truck roofs, targeting military assets, including strategic bombers. The installation of netting above parking sites along the M-10 motorway in the Novgorod region appears to be a preventative measure against similar tactics.

President Putin reportedly resides at the Valdai palace with Alina Kabaeva, 43, and their two young sons. The estimated cost for the air defense weapons, emplacements, and associated equipment is believed to be close to £1 billion.
