Two four-month-old puppies, found abandoned in a Queens, New York, dumpster with their mouths crudely wired shut, are recovering and have been put up for adoption. The puppies, named Poppy and Petunia, were discovered on July 12 in Flushing.
Animal advocates reported that the dogs were severely underweight and suffering from painful jaw injuries when they were found. The wiring prevented them from opening their mouths. Following their discovery, a good Samaritan alerted the authorities, and the puppies were transported to an emergency veterinary center.
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the puppies received critical medical care at an Animal Recovery Center in Manhattan. They were treated for their wounds and given antibiotics. Both puppies are now healthy and ready to be placed in new homes.
Poppy is described on the ASPCA adoption site as "a sweetheart" who greets everyone with a wagging tail. Petunia is characterized as "a bundle of joy with a playful spirit." Both dogs have mismatched eyes, one blue and one brown. Their breeds have not been identified.
The ASPCA is seeking information regarding the individuals responsible for abandoning and abusing the puppies. "We strongly urge anyone with information about this case to contact 311 immediately so we can help bring their abusers to justice," said David Little, senior law enforcement liaison for the ASPCA.
