Pulis Urges Man City to Adopt 'Siege Mentality' Amidst Financial Allegations

As Manchester City prepares to resume their Premier League campaign against Liverpool at Anfield, manager Enzo Maresca will be tasked with fostering a "siege mentality" among his players. The team faces intense scrutiny and external pressures stemming from ongoing financial rule violation allegations against the club.

Columnist Tony Pulis highlighted that while City's players are not directly implicated in the financial charges, they must anticipate a hostile reception from opposing fans and media.

Pulis suggested that Maresca's immediate priority should be to reassure his squad that the club will robustly defend its position. Following this, the focus must unequivocally shift to on-field performance, with no tolerance for distractions or external excuses.

"Once that is established, I would then expect every player to concentrate on what they are being paid for, which is to win games," Pulis wrote. "There should be no distractions or any questions that do not relate to the games they are involved in. No excuses about what is happening off the field would be tolerated, and that would be my final word on the matter."

The allegations against Manchester City have become a significant off-field issue, dominating headlines and creating a media frenzy. Despite the constant pressure, the club has maintained its denial of all charges.

Pulis also raised broader questions about the fairness and effectiveness of current financial regulations in professional football, particularly in light of massive financial investments and large player transfer sums. He noted that while top clubs often maintain their dominance, smaller clubs can achieve success through smart management, citing examples like Brighton and Brentford.

"It's great to see, but surely the rules need to reward all clubs for being smart," Pulis stated. "Doing the right thing should give everyone the chance to compete at the highest level."
