Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua is focusing on personal growth, including therapy and family support, as he navigates an offseason marked by off-field concerns and pending contract negotiations.
Nacua acknowledged that recent events this offseason have not accurately reflected his true character or the values instilled by his mother. He has engaged in conversations with her to apologize and has entered a rehabilitation center, recommitting to therapy and making lifestyle adjustments. He emphasized that his primary motivation is to address the concerns of his loved ones, with the message to the Rams organization about his trustworthiness as a long-term investment being a secondary consideration.
"There have been some things that obviously happened this offseason that haven’t been the truest reflection of who I believe I am or how my mother raised me," Nacua said Wednesday after a Rams training camp practice at Loyola Marymount University. "And there’s definitely been conversations with her to apologize."
He credited his mother’s supportive response and the candid feedback from his brothers, whom he calls his "biggest critics," for providing a sense of freedom. Nacua also noted that becoming a father in November has been a life-changing experience that has helped keep him grounded and sharpened his sense of responsibility.
Despite entering the final year of his rookie contract and facing potential contract delays, Nacua stated that skipping training camp was not an option. He aims to demonstrate his commitment through his off-field development and on-field performance.
"Hopefully, if I continue doing my part, everything else will fall into place," Nacua said.
Early reports from training camp indicate Nacua has arrived in top physical shape, attributing it to cleaner habits. On the field, he has reportedly been performing exceptionally well against the Rams' defense, showcasing speed and precision, and maintaining a strong connection with quarterback Matthew Stafford. He has been a consistent target, scoring multiple touchdowns during recent practices.
Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed pride in Nacua's accountability and his response to learning experiences. However, McVay also indicated that the team wants to see this sustained growth over time before making a significant long-term financial commitment.
"I’ve been really proud of the accountability he’s shown and the way he’s responded to things he can learn from," McVay said.
McVay is not attaching a timeline to a potential contract or using it as a motivational tool, emphasizing that Nacua's drive stems from a genuine desire to improve.
"He’s motivated because his heart is in the right place," McVay added. "The contract side of things will take care of itself because he’s an incredible player."
Nacua reiterated his commitment to taking ownership of his actions and focusing on self-improvement. "I’m trying to take accountability for the things I know I can change and continue to grow from," he said. "I want to become the best version of myself on and off the football field."
This process has involved regular therapy sessions, which Nacua says have helped him find healthy outlets for communication and processing. He has also become more intentional about his social circle, working to establish routines and tighten his circle of trust.
While the outcome of his contract negotiations and any potential NFL discipline remain uncertain, Nacua feels better equipped to handle whatever comes next. He described football as a safe space and expressed his love for the game.
