Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua is actively addressing off-field challenges through a disciplined approach centered on accountability and personal growth, including a practice that has garnered attention from ESPN insider Adam Schefter: journaling. Nacua has spent recent months working to rebuild trust with the organization and demonstrate that his development away from the field can parallel his on-field talent.

Nacua's commitment to these efforts was highlighted during an appearance on "The Adam Schefter Podcast." Schefter praised Nacua for openly acknowledging past issues and seeking help, a step Schefter described as courageous. "He’s acknowledging that he’s had issues. He’s seeking help. He’s not afraid to admit it," Schefter said.

The practice of journaling, which Schefter has followed daily since 1990, was particularly noted. Schefter described it as a therapeutic tool that offers perspective by allowing individuals to reflect on past concerns and recognize what truly matters. "You go back, and you look, and you see how you thought things at certain times in your life were really significant and really didn’t matter," Schefter explained. "And it gives you a whole new perspective. It gives you an outlet. I love that Puka is doing it."

Nacua's rehabilitation efforts have included a brief but impactful stint at a private facility and ongoing engagement with the team therapist and weekly meetings. "Little did I know that even just writing in a journal has been as simple as that," Nacua told reporters. "And just finding ways to express some of the things that I find near and dear to my heart, and then also just to write down the accomplishments. There’s been a lot of good things amidst some of these things that have been challenging for me. But it’s been a great improvement in my life."

The Rams organization has publicly supported Nacua while emphasizing the need for improved judgment. Head coach Sean McVay commended Nacua's vulnerability, and quarterback Matthew Stafford confirmed he has maintained regular contact with Nacua, noting the receiver's strong performance in workouts.

This period of personal growth is significant as Nacua enters a crucial phase of his career. Following a season where he led the NFL in receptions, Nacua is eligible for a substantial contract extension. However, reports suggest the Rams are adopting a cautious approach, awaiting a "pattern of strong behavior" before committing to a deal that could potentially exceed $170 million. Nacua appears aware of this expectation, having spoken about his responsibilities as a new father, learning from mistakes, and using his platform more responsibly.
