Pub's 24-Hour Launderette Sparks Noise and Parking Complaints

A pub in Norwich has faced a wave of complaints from residents regarding its newly installed 24-hour launderette. The Woodman pub established the facility outside its premises in an effort to boost income amid rising operational costs.

Residents living near the pub have voiced strong objections to the noise generated by the machines, the bright lighting that remains on throughout the night, and the resulting parking disruptions. Pippa Lain-Smith, a resident living opposite the pub, described the launderette as an "eyesore" that is "extremely intrusive and not in keeping with the area." She specifically pointed to the blue lighting system as a source of light pollution.

Another neighbor reported that customers using the launderette were parking on pavements, forcing pedestrians to walk into the main road to navigate around the vehicles, which they deemed "ridiculous" and a potential accident hazard.

In response to the community's concerns, the pub owners have agreed to limit the launderette's operating hours to between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. The lighting will now be set to a timer to avoid illuminating the area all night. Additionally, customers will be permitted to use the pub's car park for free for one hour.

Antony Little, the local county councillor, acknowledged the financial pressures pubs face and their need to diversify income streams. However, he emphasized that such diversification should not negatively impact the community. Little stated, "There needs to be a way where we can reasonably keep the machines while ensuring that neighbours' homes are not blighted." He also expressed surprise that the facility did not require planning permission or neighbor consultation.

A parish meeting is scheduled to further discuss the residents' concerns.
