Clashes erupted between protesters and riot police in Paris on Saturday, as demonstrations across France turned violent. What began as a largely peaceful day of protests devolved into unrest after nightfall, with participants throwing fireworks and objects at law enforcement.
Authorities deployed approximately 70,000 officers nationwide for the second consecutive weekend. Police utilized tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds. The Interior Ministry reported that around 400,000 people participated in the demonstrations, resulting in nearly 1,000 arrests.
Europe correspondent Nick Beake reported from Paris, noting that signs of the unrest easing were not immediately apparent.
