Protester Disrupts Pro-Data Center Party Amid AI Push

A protester disrupted a pro-data center event in Washington, D.C., voicing opposition to the industry's water consumption and its role in artificial intelligence development. The incident occurred during the "Data After Dark" party, which gathered over 600 attendees to show support for data center infrastructure.

The protester reportedly shouted slogans such as "Thank you for using all of our water!" and "You’re killing the world," while making gestures toward the crowd. According to party co-host Casey Givens, the individual initially asked to offer a toast of support but, after being refused, took the stage and attempted to seize a microphone. Security removed the protester, after which the attendees responded with chants of "USA, USA, USA."

Data centers are essential for powering artificial intelligence by housing the high-performance computers necessary for storing, processing, and analyzing data. Givens stated that the party was organized to counter what he described as "hysteria" surrounding data centers, aiming instead to highlight their benefits, including local economic development and national technological innovation.

Former President Donald Trump has been a vocal proponent of rapidly expanding data center construction as a key component of his artificial intelligence agenda. He has argued that the United States must lead in the global AI race and that opposition to data center development plays into China's hands. Trump has previously warned that obstructing these projects could lead to negative economic consequences.

In a September address, Trump emphasized the importance of American leadership in AI, referring to it as "superintelligence." He stated, "Whoever wins superintelligence wins. That's the group that wins. And we're leading now over China by a lot and everyone else. And we're going to keep it that way."
