Prosecutors Seek Life Sentences for Alexander Brothers in Sex Trafficking Case
Federal prosecutors have urged a New York judge to impose life sentences on luxury real estate brokers Oren and Alon Alexander and their brother Tal, who were convicted of sex trafficking charges.
Federal prosecutors are seeking life sentences for luxury real estate brokers Oren and Alon Alexander and their brother, Tal, who were convicted in March of sex trafficking and other charges. The brothers, who operated in the high-end real estate market, are accused of drugging and raping dozens of women over a two-decade period.
In written submissions preceding the sentencing later this month, prosecutors argued that the defendants are "serial rapists" who violated numerous women and girls. The government has identified at least 70 victims. Prosecutors stated that the brothers began their assaults as early as 2001 or 2002, developing a pattern of drugging women before assaulting them during luxury getaways and other social events.
Prosecutors noted that the Probation Office recommended 15 years for each victim, which could lead to sentences of 180 years for Alon and Tal Alexander and 195 years for Oren Alexander. The mandatory minimum sentence for sex trafficking is 15 years.
Defense attorneys, however, have recommended 15-year terms for the brothers. They described the Alexanders as "dedicated husbands and fathers" who have lived lives contrary to the accusations. The defense contends that the brothers have maintained their innocence and plans to appeal the convictions, citing "remarkably weak" evidence on critical points and "overwhelming prejudice" during the trial. They urged the judge to view the brothers as "human beings, not the monsters falsely portrayed."
