Prosecutors Investigate Jeffrey Epstein's Lawyer and Accountant

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan are reportedly investigating Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime lawyer and accountant, Darren Indyke and Richard Kahn, according to The Wall Street Journal. The two men assumed control of Epstein's estate following his death in 2019 and could stand to collect significant sums from a trust holding his remaining assets.

The Journal reported that Manhattan federal prosecutors have recently requested emails and financial records pertaining to Indyke and Kahn, and have been contacting potential witnesses as part of their inquiry. The probe comes after congressional investigators had already focused on the pair's authority over Epstein-linked bank accounts and transactions.

In August, Senate Finance Committee investigators stated that both Indyke and Kahn acted as financial intermediaries for Epstein and held signatory authority or powers of attorney over accounts at JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank. These investigators also noted that suspicious activity reports from JPMorgan flagged over $1.3 billion in wire transfers through Epstein-related accounts, though such reports do not confirm criminal activity.

Indyke and Kahn have previously denied any knowledge of Epstein's alleged sex trafficking activities or any involvement in his crimes. According to the Journal, prosecutors are inquiring about the men's roles in Epstein-related entities and their handling of financial and legal matters concerning young women. The Journal previously reported that Indyke and Kahn were officers of Epstein-linked entities that facilitated transactions, provided cash to Epstein, and made payments to women, allegations the two men have denied as wrongdoing.

The current federal investigation is notable as neither Indyke nor Kahn were questioned about their work for Epstein during the Manhattan investigations that led to sex-trafficking charges against Epstein and later Ghislaine Maxwell. Both men testified under subpoena before the House Oversight Committee earlier this year, with Kahn being deposed on March 11 and Indyke on March 19.

An attorney for Kahn referred to his previous denial of wrongdoing when contacted by the Journal. A representative for Indyke did not respond, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment. The specific offenses under investigation have not been disclosed.

Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to felony charges related to soliciting prostitution and procuring minors for prostitution. He was sentenced to 18 months in county jail and registered as a sex offender. In 2019, federal prosecutors in Manhattan charged him with sex-trafficking conspiracy and sex trafficking of minors, alleging he recruited and paid underage girls for sexual encounters and incentivized them to recruit others. Epstein maintained his innocence and died by suicide in jail before his federal trial could take place.
