Dr. Shawn Clark, a prominent neurosurgeon, died by suicide on Monday after being charged with more than a dozen child pornography offenses in two Alabama counties. He was 59.

The Mobile County Sheriff's Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit launched an investigation into Clark in March 2026 after receiving a tip about possible child sexual abuse material linked to IP addresses at his home and medical office. Clark had pleaded not guilty to the charges and was due back in court next month.

Clark and his wife, Dr. Melanie Clark, a radiologist and assistant professor of radiology at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, married on Sept. 13, 2008. The couple, who lived in a $2 million mansion in Mobile, Alabama, with their two children, had put their marital home up for sale on Oct. 22. Divorce proceedings were underway, and court filings indicated Clark had been permitted to use a Subaru Crosstrek, which was removed from the scene where his body was discovered.

Mobile police said Clark was found dead inside the vehicle, parked in the lot of a vacant building that had previously served as an urgent care facility. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
