Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., a prominent progressive and member of the "Squad," has won the Democratic primary for Michigan's 12th Congressional District, securing her party's nomination for a fifth term. Her victory continues a pattern of success for far-left candidates in Democratic primaries across the country.
Tlaib's primary win against state lawmaker Shanelle Jackson and Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen strengthens the influence of the Democratic Party's progressive wing. The group, which includes members aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has seen its electoral footprint expand.
When Tlaib and her colleagues first joined the House of Representatives in 2019, their campaigns were noted for their progressive stances. Tlaib and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., were particularly recognized for their DSA membership. The DSA has once again endorsed Tlaib, highlighting her advocacy for issues such as affordable housing, clean air and water, and a ceasefire in Gaza.
This progressive surge is evident in other recent primary contests. In Colorado, democratic socialist Melat Kiros, 29, unseated Rep. Diana DeGette, a 30-year incumbent, in a significant primary victory. Similarly, in New York, socialist candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier won her primary against Rep. Adriano Espillat, D-N.Y., the chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
These outcomes represent a shift from the party's introspection following the 2020 elections, where some Democrats attributed narrower House and Senate majorities to messaging challenges. At that time, some in the party, like then-Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., suggested moving away from socialist messaging. However, Tlaib and other progressives argued that their platforms, grounded in a "new generation of leadership grounded in a multiracial, working-class experience and background," would appeal to a broader electorate and set the future tone for the Democratic Party.
Tlaib has previously drawn parallels between progressive populist appeals and the appeal of former President Donald Trump to his base, emphasizing the need to respect all voices within the country, including marginalized communities.
With her primary victory secured, Tlaib is now set to advance to the general election on November 3, 2026. She is considered heavily favored to win, having previously secured re-election in 2024 with 69.7% of the vote against Republican challenger James Hooper.
