Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon has defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman in the state’s Democratic Senate primary, securing a victory over the nationally recognized figure who was a key witness in the impeachment of former President Donald Trump. Nixon will now advance to the general election to compete for the seat vacated by Marco Rubio.
Nixon’s win came despite Vindman’s significant fundraising advantage. Vindman, who gained prominence from his role in Trump’s first impeachment, entered the race with a national profile. He reported approximately $14.6 million in campaign receipts through June 30, while Nixon reported about $625,000 during the same period, according to Federal Election Commission records.
Nixon, a Democrat from Jacksonville first elected to the Florida House in 2020, has a background in community and labor organizing. Her campaign highlights her work as a union organizer, including roles as state field director for SEIU Florida and director of the Florida Public Service Union’s Higher Education Campaign. Her occupation is listed as "Higher Education Director" in her Florida House biography.
During the primary campaign, Nixon defended her progressive stances. She voiced support for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), arguing that existing law enforcement could manage criminal conduct and stating, "Immigration is not a criminal issue. It’s a civil issue." Nixon also backed a proposal to freeze rents nationwide for at least one year, attributing rising costs to "corporate greed" and insurance companies.
When questioned about the financial implications of policies such as Medicare for All, Nixon stated she would not raise taxes on the middle class and emphasized her concern for "the debt of hardworking, everyday people." She also expressed a need for "new leadership all across the country" and declined to commit to supporting Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Nixon’s affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) also drew attention. While Nixon told public radio in July that she was a DSA member, DSA officials indicated to Fox News on primary night that her current membership status was unclear, noting she had previously belonged to a local chapter and sought its endorsement.
Vindman, a retired lieutenant colonel, served on the National Security Council and became a central figure in the impeachment inquiry against Trump following his concerns about a 2019 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Nixon will now face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in the general election. The winner will serve the remaining two years of Marco Rubio’s Senate term. The general election will determine who holds the seat through the end of Rubio's original term, with the seat up for full contest again in 2028. Democrats have not won a U.S. Senate election in Florida since 2012.
