A recent online exchange between progressive House Democrats and a moderate colleague has exposed growing divisions within the Democratic Party, particularly concerning stances on Israel and the influence of socialist factions.

The conflict began when Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., a centrist Democrat, criticized the influence of democratic socialists within the party, stating on X that they "are not Democrats" and "want to hijack the Democratic Party." He further asserted that "there’s no room for anti-American bomb-throwers who oppose our ideas, values, & leaders."

In response, Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., accused Gottheimer of being among the Democrats who "sign bombs and vote to drop them." Gottheimer countered that Lee had confused him with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, another Jewish Democrat. Shapiro had previously signed an artillery shell bound for Ukraine during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the state. Gottheimer then pointed out that Lee and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., had voted for a $60.8 billion Ukraine aid package, referencing an official House roll call.

This exchange occurred amid broader intraparty debates, including a recent vote on an amendment led by Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky. The amendment, which failed, aimed to prohibit the use of funds in an underlying bill for Israel and reduce foreign military financing by $3.3 billion. Lee and Omar were among 103 Democrats who voted in favor of the amendment, while Gottheimer voted against it. This vote highlights the differing approaches to supporting Israel within the Democratic caucus.

Gottheimer has previously voiced concerns about a perceived double standard within the Democratic Party regarding antisemitism. In a New York Times opinion piece, he argued that while Democrats often condemn antisemitism from the right, there is a tendency towards silence when it emerges from the left.
