Progressive organizations, including the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), are actively supporting candidates in multiple Michigan congressional primaries, extending their influence beyond the U.S. Senate race. These efforts target a range of districts, from solidly Democratic areas to more competitive and even Republican-held seats, signaling a broader strategy to gain ground within the Democratic Party.
The primary elections in Michigan are seen by the party's progressive wing as an opportunity to reclaim working-class voters and challenge the party's moderate establishment. Figures associated with the "Squad" and other progressive leaders have converged in the state to endorse candidates.
House Primary Battles
A closely watched contest is the challenge by state Rep. Donavan McKinney, endorsed by the DSA, against incumbent Rep. Shri Thanedar in the Detroit-based 13th Congressional District. This district, considered a safe Democratic seat, has seen Thanedar, a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, facing scrutiny. His 2022 election marked the first time since 1955 that Detroit lacked a Black representative in Congress. Thanedar, who has a significant personal fortune, previously introduced articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump.
The DSA is also backing incumbent Rep. Rashida Tlaib in her district. Tlaib, an original member of the "Squad," is considered a strong favorite to win her seat.
Targeting Republican-Held Seats
In a bid to expand their reach, the DSA is also supporting Kyle Blomquist, a Democrat, in his challenge against Republican Rep. Jack Bergman in Michigan's 8th Congressional District. Bergman secured reelection by a significant margin in the past. Although not backed by the DSA, progressive efforts are also focused on the 7th Congressional District, a swing district anchored by Lansing. Three Democratic candidates are vying for this seat: William Lawrence, a co-founder of the Sunrise Movement endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders; Matt Maasdam; and Bridget Brink.
Michigan has historically served as a focal point for progressive movements. Sen. Bernie Sanders won the state's Democratic presidential primary in 2016, and the state was a key site for the "uncommitted" movement protesting former President Joe Biden's policies in 2024.
The current political landscape in Michigan highlights an ongoing internal debate within the Democratic Party. Moderate Democrats often argue that progressive stances can alienate swing voters, while progressives maintain that voters are receptive to bold policy proposals. Proponents of the progressive approach suggest that many independent voters are disillusioned with both major parties and can be swayed by issue-based campaigns.
