Pro-Israel Groups Barred From Anniversary March by Hard-Left Activists
Jewish anti-Zionist group declares 'fascists aren't welcome' at event commemorating the Battle of Cable Street.
Hard-left activists have declared that pro-Israel Jewish groups are not welcome at an anniversary march commemorating the Battle of Cable Street, a historic event where East End Jews and their neighbors repelled Oswald Mosley's blackshirts 90 years ago.
Jewish Anti-Zionist Action, a group that states 'there is no antifascism without anti-Zionism,' announced on Instagram that 'fascists aren't welcome at the antifascist march.' The campaign is fronted by Talia Woodin, a 27-year-old former Extinction Rebellion coordinator. Woodin, who is Jewish, is the daughter of Mike Woodin, a former principal speaker for the Green Party.
Woodin criticized the Board of Deputies of British Jews, a body representing the community, which has organized a 'festival of Jewish culture' to mark the occasion. In an online video, Woodin argued that the Board of Deputies cannot claim the march as its own, citing the group's alleged warning to Jewish Chronicle readers in 1936 to avoid Cable Street rather than confront the blackshirts.
Woodin's group is part of a coalition of left-wing organizations, including London Community Defence and Jewish Voice for Liberation, that are working to prevent pro-Israel groups from attending the march. London Community Defence previously shared an image on social media featuring politician Nigel Farage with sniper crosshairs, captioned: 'For legal purposes, I think it would be a terrible idea to buss [sic] a cap in Nigel's ass.' Jewish Voice for Liberation recently condemned Leeds Minster for removing a Gaza tribute that included the names of Hamas terrorists.
A Metropolitan Police source indicated that disorder is not anticipated at the march, though acknowledged that disputes between groups are always possible.
