Inmates at HMP Erlestoke in Wiltshire are participating in the Prison Art Project, a scheme designed to aid their rehabilitation through the creation and sale of artwork. The initiative, supported by the homeless charity ALABARÉ, provides prisoners with art supplies and the opportunity to sell their creations online.
Participants receive an art pack containing materials such as acrylics, pencils, watercolours, and pastels. They are tasked with producing up to four pieces of artwork. When a piece is sold, 50% of the proceeds go directly to the artist, while the remaining half is reinvested into funding art materials for other participants in the scheme. This model ensures the program's sustainability and continued support for artistic endeavors within the prison.
According to the charity, the project offers a meaningful activity that contributes to rehabilitation and encourages better choices. Inmates involved in the program have reported positive impacts on their mental health and overall well-being, describing the process of creating and selling their artwork as "rewarding."
