Prison Psychologist Jailed for 28 Months Over Sex Sessions and Smuggling Scheme
Dr. Amber-Renee Gayle allowed a lifer to film their intimate encounters and facilitated the smuggling of phones and SIM cards into HMP Swinfen Hall.
A prison psychologist has been sentenced to 28 months in prison for engaging in a sexual relationship with an inmate and orchestrating a scheme to smuggle contraband into HMP Swinfen Hall. Dr. Amber-Renee Gayle, 32, allowed murderer Rickcarlo Williams, 24, to record their sexual encounters in a therapy room at the Staffordshire prison.
Over a six-month period in 2024, Gayle and Williams exchanged more than 12,000 messages on secret phones. Their illicit activities also involved smuggling mobile phones, SIM cards, dongles, and chargers into the facility, concealing them in hollowed-out dictionaries, baked bean tins, and energy drink cans. The pair reportedly charged inmates up to £2,000 for an iPhone, £500 for a USB stick, and £50 for a SIM card.
Prosecutor Daniel White stated that the specially modified containers allowed Gayle to conceal the items before entering the prison grounds. Sentencing Gayle at Birmingham Crown Court, Her Honour Sarah Buckingham described her actions as a "gross breach of trust" that undermined confidence in the prison service and created an unsafe environment.
Gayle received a 14-month sentence for conspiracy to convey banned items into prison and an additional consecutive eight-month sentence for misconduct in public office. She also received a six-month sentence for computer misuse after accessing the prison's National Offender Management Information System to obtain information on other inmates.
Gayle began her role as a practitioner of psychology at HMP Swinfen Hall in June 2021, where she was responsible for approximately 50 young individuals with complex trauma needs. Concerns about her conduct with inmates surfaced in early 2024, and despite receiving counter-corruption training, her relationship with Williams, who is serving a minimum 25-year sentence for murder, began in May of that year.
Investigators estimate that Gayle and Williams smuggled around 35 mobile phones, chargers, dongles, and SIM cards into the prison, potentially earning up to £9,550. Gayle communicated with Williams' associates using a secret SIM card and referred to herself as "Rickcarlo's girl" in messages. She also provided Williams with updates on phone sales and warned him about impending cell searches.
Investigators discovered explicit images and videos of the couple, as well as evidence of Gayle accessing the prison intelligence database to check on another inmate's whereabouts on Williams' behalf. In one message, Gayle wrote to Williams, "I care about you so much. You are my baby."
Rachel Roberts, a consultant psychologist at Swinfen Hall, stated in a victim impact statement that Gayle's actions had a "devastating impact" on the service, causing confusion, anger, and eroding trust among inmates.
In mitigation, Gayle's defense argued that she was a young woman of previously exemplary character who had initially flagged inappropriate sexual advances from Williams to her line manager in August 2023. However, personal health issues and infidelity in her own long-term relationship led to a "gross lack of professionalism."
Judge Buckingham asserted that Gayle was not naive and was an equal partner in the criminal enterprise, if not in charge. Williams, who appeared via video link from HMP Birmingham, admitted to conspiring to smuggle banned items and possessing a mobile phone in his cell. His sentence will be extended by 14 months upon becoming eligible for parole. Williams was sentenced in 2022 to a minimum of 25 years for the 2020 machete murder of Hussein Al-Saabri.
