Samantha Stowell, who began her career at the notorious Strangeways prison at age 19, has avoided jail time after a court heard about her relationship with inmate Conor Dobson. Stowell, now 23, was given a six-month sentence suspended for 24 months for misconduct in public office.

Illicit Relationship Uncovered

The affair, which lasted three months, came to light after prison staff discovered an iPhone in Dobson's cell. An investigation revealed dozens of messages exchanged between Stowell and Dobson between February and August 2023, some containing explicit sexual content and topless photos and videos. The court heard that Dobson also transferred approximately £1,200 into Stowell's bank account for gifts, including items referenced as 'dinner date,' 'Tiffany and Co,' and 'hair.'

Stowell referred to herself as Dobson's 'Little Princess' and expressed her love for him, stating she missed him and hoped to be with him properly again. She also sent him explicit videos of herself and participated in video calls with him while he was topless in his cell. Stowell later admitted to police that she had been "stupid" and did not want to go to prison.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

During the sentencing at Manchester Crown Court, the judge, Patrick Field, questioned the prison service's decision to allow Stowell to begin working at the high-security facility at the age of 19. He described Strangeways as a "lion's den" and suggested that "sophisticated prisoners should try to exploit her" immaturity and lack of life experience. Stowell had undergone anti-corruption training, which included warnings about engaging in inappropriate relationships with prisoners.

Stowell's defense argued she was "mortified, embarrassed and full of regret." She was dismissed from her post in August 2023. In addition to the suspended sentence, Stowell was ordered to attend 15 rehabilitation days, complete 250 hours of unpaid work, and pay £250 in costs.

Dobson was serving a 15-year sentence for the manslaughter of a retired nurse. Stowell had reportedly received emotional support from Dobson during a period of sick leave after another prisoner died by suicide in his cell.
