Princeton Faculty Political Donations Heavily Favor Democrats, Study Finds
A new analysis reveals an overwhelming majority of political contributions from Princeton University faculty in the 2023-2024 cycle went to Democratic candidates and groups, with no donations recorded for Republicans.
A study examining political contributions from Princeton University faculty members during the 2023-2024 election cycle found that 98% of donations favored Democrats, while no funds were contributed to Republican candidates. The analysis, conducted by Princetonians for Free Speech (PFS), revealed that only a small fraction, 2%, of faculty donations went to Independents and affiliated groups.
The findings, detailed in a report released this week, suggest a significant ideological imbalance among the faculty at the Ivy League institution. PFS stated that the results point to a "near-total absence of viewpoint diversity among the university’s faculty."
This trend mirrors findings from similar studies at other top universities. A 2022 study by The Harvard Crimson indicated that over 80% of Harvard University's faculty identified their political views as liberal or very liberal. In a comparable analysis, Yale News reported that 98% of donations from Yale professors during a recent cycle also went to Democrats, with the remaining 2% directed to independent candidates or groups.
Edward Yingling, co-founder and chairman of PFS, commented on the study's implications, stating, "This first-of-its-kind study of Princeton faculty contributions demonstrates the glaring lack of viewpoint diversity among Princeton faculty, an issue that Princeton’s leadership can no longer ignore." Princetonians for Free Speech is an organization founded in late 2020 that advocates for freedom of speech, academic freedom, and diversity of viewpoints at Princeton.
The report of faculty political leanings comes amid broader discussions about ideology in academia. In February, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced a ban on service members attending graduate programs at Princeton and other universities deemed by the Pentagon as "woke breeding grounds of toxic indoctrination," citing concerns over programs undermining the values service members have sworn to uphold.
