Princess of Wales Surprises Elderly Passengers on Community Minibus Trip
The Princess of Wales visited a volunteer-run transport service in Sussex to highlight its role in combating isolation and supporting independence.
The Princess of Wales made an unexpected appearance in Pulborough, Sussex, on Wednesday morning, joining the team at the West Sussex Minibus service. The organization provides a crucial link for individuals who face challenges accessing public transportation due to mobility issues, isolation, or financial constraints.
Catherine's visit aimed to draw attention to the significant role community transport plays in fostering social connections, reducing loneliness, and enabling the acts of kindness performed by volunteers, who are often the backbone of local communities.
This engagement follows a visit on Tuesday with Prince William to Yorkshire, where they surprised Sir Kevin Sinfield during his endurance challenge for Motor Neurone Disease charities.
The West Sussex Minibus service, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, relies entirely on volunteers to serve people in rural areas of the county. Established in response to a decrease in local public transport, the service is designed to help elderly passengers maintain their independence, social lives, and overall quality of life.
The organization has expanded from a single minibus to a fleet of 11 vehicles, operating from eight village hubs and supported by 284 volunteers. Collectively, the fleet covers approximately 60,000 miles annually, facilitating 13,000 passenger journeys.
The Princess began her visit by accompanying one of the minibus routes, assisting passengers with boarding. While on the bus, she heard firsthand accounts of how the service serves as a vital lifeline for many isolated individuals, enabling them to remain active and independent.
The visit concluded at Pulborough Village Hall, a site that hosts a weekly lunch club. This gathering provides a welcoming environment for community members to engage in activities and conversation. The Princess met with attendees to discuss their experiences and also spent time with the dedicated volunteers who make the minibus service possible.
