Princess Margaret's legacy of eschewing strict royal formality appears to live on through her four grandchildren, who have largely stepped away from royal life to pursue independent careers and interests.
Margaret, who was born on August 21, 1930, famously stated that her children "just happen to have the Queen as an aunt," emphasizing their status as individuals rather than solely as royals. This ethos seems to have influenced her son, David Armstrong-Jones, the 2nd Earl of Snowdon, and daughter, Lady Sarah Chatto, both of whom have established careers as a furniture designer and an artist, respectively.
Their children—Samuel Chatto, Arthur Chatto, Charles Armstrong-Jones (Viscount Linley), and Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones—are now adults in their twenties and have followed suit, forging their own paths.
Samuel Chatto: The Ceramic Artist
Princess Margaret's eldest grandchild, Samuel Chatto, 29, has embraced his family's artistic inclinations as a ceramic artist. Son of Lady Sarah Chatto and Daniel Chatto, Samuel studied art history at the University of Edinburgh and trained at the Royal Drawing School in London. His ceramic work, often inspired by British and Japanese aesthetics, has been exhibited internationally. In 2025, he was an artist in residence at RAM Galleri in Oslo. Samuel recently became engaged to fellow artist Eleanor Ekserdjian, reportedly creating her engagement ring from porcelain.
Samuel also trained as a yoga teacher in India in 2019. While he has attended significant royal events such as Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral and King Charles' Coronation, his focus remains on his creative career.
Arthur Chatto: Geography, Fitness, and the Military
Samuel's younger brother, Arthur Chatto, 27, has pursued a different direction, focusing on geography, fitness, and a military career. After studying geography at the University of Edinburgh, Arthur participated in the GB Row Challenge, an ambitious rowing expedition around the British coastline, to raise money for environmental charities. In 2021, he joined the Royal Marines.
Arthur has maintained a relatively private personal life, deleting his once-active Instagram account. He wore his Royal Marines uniform at Queen Elizabeth II's funeral in 2022.
Charles Armstrong-Jones: Music and Product Design
Charles Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley, the eldest child of David Armstrong-Jones, inherited a title but also a creative spirit, following in his cousin Samuel's footsteps. Educated at Eton and Loughborough University, where he studied product design engineering, Charles discovered a passion for music. He is self-taught in playing the piano and guitar and creating orchestral music using technology.
Charles, who is the future Earl of Snowdon, attended the Royal Family's Christmas gathering at Sandringham in 2025.
Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones: Jewellery Design and Fashion
The youngest grandchild, Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones, 24, shares her grandmother's penchant for statement style and has a passion for photography and jewellery design. She attended Oxford Brookes University and trained at Paris's Haute École de Joaillerie. Margarita received Princess Margaret's engagement ring on her 21st birthday, which she wears for significant occasions.
She has launched her own jewellery brand, Matita, with designs that she describes as playing with expectations and rebelling against the norm. Margarita also has an interest in fashion, stating she enjoys experimenting with styles. She joined her brother Charles at the Sandringham Christmas gathering in 2025.
